Rumors and leaks of a supposed Halloween event for Blizzard’s team-based shooter Overwatch have cropped up over the past few days. Now, it appears Sony itself may have inadvertently confirmed the event’s existence.
Despite evidence found in places like Reddit, gaming message boards, and even the Taiwanese version of the official Overwatch website, Blizzard has remained tight-lipped on whether or not a Halloween event is indeed being prepped for the game.
However, a recent listing on the European PlayStation Blog for a new Overwatch microtransaction item called the “Halloween Loot Box” has added a substantial amount of validity to the ongoing rumors.
The PlayStation Blog listing says that the Halloween Loot Boxes should be available tomorrow, October 12th. This suggests that tomorrow is the day Blizzard originally intended to surprise Overwatch players with the event, much like they did with the unexpected launch of Overwatch’s previous Summer Games event.
If the Halloween event goes in the same direction as the Summer Games event, it will allow players to unlock special limited-time cosmetic items such as skins, emotes, and sprays by way of opening Halloween Loot Boxes.
We’ve reached out to Blizzard for comment, but our bet is that the studio will remain quiet until tomorrow’s big reveal (if it is indeed coming).
