Mafia 3 Tips

Get a head start in the city of New Bordeaux with our tips for Mafia 3.

Mafia 3 is a large, daunting game but we are here to help with the best tips for new players in Mafia 3. The city of New Bordeaux will have you constantly exploring to learn more about the interesting city, but you won’t get very far if you keep dying! This guide will give you a headstart on fighting your way around New Bordeaux to bring Lincoln Clay to the top of the criminal underworld.

Use Cover

Despite Mafia 3’s vast open world, it is a third person cover shooter at heart, so make sure you fight like you are playing a third person cover shooter! You can enter cover by pressing X on PS4 or A on Xbox One, make sure you scout the area for the best spots before jumping in. Easily enough, the same buttons to enter cover are also the buttons to exit.

Switch Weapons Faster

Mafia 3 has a weapon wheel, but anyone who has played a weapon wheel shooter knows it is not the quickest way to swap weapons. With plenty of heated battles ahead, you are going to want to use every second to your advantage. The fastest way to switch weapons in Mafia 3 is by tapping the left bumper on Xbox One, or L1 on PS4. Holding those buttons brings up the weapon wheel, but tapping will immediately switch to your heavy weapon.

Intel View

Being a Vietnam War veteran, Lincoln knows how to spot threats and minor details in an area. Take advantage of this with his Intel View, activated by pressing the touch pad on the PS4 or View button on Xbox One. Intel View will highlight important information in gold, like collectables and hidden items, while enemies and dangerous objects are red. Intel View is unlimited while standing still, but it will go away as soon as you move. Get into the habit of scouting an area before diving in a fight.

Open Doors Politely, or Not

Something as simple as opening a door can have a drastic effect on how your experience in a room will play out. When you encounter a locked door in New Bordeaux you will be presented with two options, prying it open with a crowbar or kicking it down. Kicking down a door will go exactly as you’d expect, every enemy in the area will be waiting for you. Make sure you are loaded up on ammo and ready to shoot if you decide to kick in a door.

The crowbar is an entirely different option however, use it to sneak in quietly. Enemies will not be immediately alerted to your presence if you crowbar a door, so this is the best option for stealthier players.

Whistle While You Work

As strange as it seems, the whistle mechanic is one of the most effective strategies while fighting through the streets of New Bordeaux. Find yourself a nice dark corner in stealth, whistle by pressing left on the D-Pad, shift slightly, and then watch as your clueless victim saunters over to investigate. Once the enemy is close, stab them with your melee weapon for a silent kill.

Change the Radio

This might not help you elevate Lincoln to Godfather status, but Mafia 3 is loaded with great music so listen to all of it! Press right on the D-Pad to switch radio stations. With 101 songs in Mafia 3, including hits from Elvis, Creedance, The Temptations, and Otis Redding, there are too many options to sit in your car with the same old station playing.
