PvZ: Garden Warfare 2 - How to Get Rainbow Stars

Earn rainbow stars to unlock special rare items in Garden Warfare 2.

Rainbow Stars are the newest form of currency in Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2. These stars arrived as a part of the Trials of Gnomus DLC update, and work similarly to the Gold Stars that are also available in the game. This guide will explain how Rainbow Stars are earned, what they are used for, and how to efficiently accumulate Rainbow Stars during an event.

What Rainbow Stars Are Used For

Rainbow Stars are an in-game currency that can be spent to unlock certain items in Garden Warfare 2. Since Rainbow Stars were introduced with the Trials of Gnomus content, they are only used to obtain items that are a part of this DLC.

Rainbow Stars are mainly used to unlock chests that have rainbow padlocks on them. There are three of these chests inside the Town Hall, which is only open when a time-sensitive Mystery Portal event is underway. The Yellow, Green, and Red Town Hall chests cost 10, 30, and 50 Rainbow Stars respectively, and reward the player with a heap of coins and a special customization item specific to the Trials of Gnomus DLC. Upon opening one of these chests, head over to the sticker shop to claim your reward.

The Red chest in the Town Hall costs 50 Rainbow Stars.

Rainbow Stars also allow players to access the Trials of Eternity in the new Gnomiverse region deep underground. To enter the Gnomiverse, you must first obtain the key to unlock the Gnome Cave door across from the Gnome Chamber in the underground sewers. This key can be purchased from the seagull inside the Town Hall for 25 Gold Stars.

Once you have access to the Gnome Cave, you can begin acquiring keys for the Trials of Eternity. These can only be obtained from the Red chest within the Town Hall, which can only be opened once per Mystery Portal event.

After completing the trials, two more rainbow-locked chests will become available, each costing 75 Rainbow Stars to open. The chests contain special characters that you won’t want to miss, so be sure to save up those Rainbow Stars whenever possible.

How to Get Rainbow Stars

Rainbow Stars are primarily earned by playing rounds of the Mystery Portal event mode. When a Mystery Portal event occurs, the portal inside the Town Hall will become available and will feature a particular game mode that will be listed on the nearby panel screen.  Most Mystery Portal game modes reward five Rainbow Stars for a win, and three Rainbow Stars for a loss. This can vary depending on the particular game type, but these are generally the star rewards you can expect.

Since the Mystery Portal is a temporary event that only lasts for four days at a time, it’s important to accumulate as many Rainbow Stars as possible during the event to ensure you can spend your stars on the chests you want before they're gone again. Players can only hold up to 50 Rainbow Stars at a time, so once you finish unlocking your desired chests within the Town Hall, you should accumulate another 50 Rainbow Stars to prepare for the next event.

These special chests cost 75 Rainbow Stars, 15 per lock.

If you need extra Rainbow Stars but don’t want to continue playing the Mystery Portal event, you can alternatively convert Gold Stars to Rainbow stars by trading with the Town Hall seagull. His going rate is seven Gold Stars for one Rainbow Star, which can be a steep price depending on how often you complete quests. Use this method only when you really need those few extra Rainbow Stars and have Gold Stars to spare.

The two rainbow-locked chests that become available after completing the trials require more Rainbow Stars than you can hold, so you will need to unlock each individual rainbow padlock and make multiple trips to open the chests. If you saved up 50 Rainbow Stars, spend 45 of them to unlock three of the padlocks on the chest of your choice. Return to the Mystery Portal to accumulate another 30 Rainbow Stars, then unlock the remaining padlocks to receive the reward inside.

Now that you know how Rainbow Stars work in Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, don’t forget to check the Garden Warfare 2 event calendar to keep up with each Mystery Portal event.
