Dark Souls 3 - How to Beat Champion's Gravetender

Learn how to beat Ashes of Ariandel’s Champion’s Gravetender boss.

This guide will show you how to fight and beat one of the first available bosses in Ashes of Ariandel, Champion’s Gravetender and Gravetender Greatwolf.

Locating Champion’s Gravetender

Before you even fight Champion’s Gravetender you must first locate the boss. Start by locating the rope bridge that leads to the Ariandel Chapel atop the hill. Cross the bridge and use the Bonfire in the chapel to save your location. Turn around and head back to the rope bridge but instead of crossing it, attack it, causing it to break and fall. Use this newly formed bridge-ladder to descend the mountainside.

You will reach a knot of tree branches, use these branches to work your way down to the bottom of the ravine. Down here you will find a Bonfire in a recess on the side of the valley closest to the Ariandel Chapel.

From the Depths of the Painting Bonfire, head right and drop down into a field of flowers and icicles. It is here that you will fight the Champion’s Gravetender.

This fight consists of two distinct phases, the first involves fighting the Champion’s Gravetender and his three wolves. The second phase begins when Champion’s Gravetender is close to dying, at which point the Gravetender Greatwolf will enter the battle.

The strategy for Champion’s Gravetender and the wolves is fairly simple. First, as soon as you enter the arena you should hug the right-hand wall and sprint to the back of the area. If done fast enough, you will be able to attack and kill the two wolves before they have a chance to group up.

As you kill the two wolves, the final wolf and Champion’s Gravetender will be on you. Take your time to kill the final wolf before focusing on Champion’s Gravetender.

Champion’s Gravetender is a fairly simple boss without any challenging moves. He wields a sword and shield, but on his off-hand he carries a Catalyst which he uses to cast Soul Arrows. Most of the time he will turtle behind his shield. If you’re a melee build, consider using the Knight Slayer’s Ring, as a few hits against his shield will stagger him. Take this opportunity to perform a powerful guard-break counterattack. Sorcerers and Clerics should focus on attacking after he strikes, else his shield will absorb your attacks.

Try to avoid holding your shield up, because if your guard is broken, he will perform a counterattack dealing massive damage.

When Champion’s Gravetender reaches low health the Gravetender Greatwolf will appear. To give yourself enough time to kill the Champion before the Greatwolf appears, fight Champion's Gravetender at the back of the arena where the first two wolves are located as the Gravetender Greatwolf will have to walk the entire stretch of the field to reach you. Once Champion’s Gravetender dies, shift your focus to the Gravetender Greatwolf.

How to Beat Gravetender Greatwolf

The Gravetender Greatwolf is the second part of this fight, but you should already recognize it from earlier in the DLC. The giant wolf that jumps down and attacks you earlier is in fact the Gravetender Greatwolf. If you managed to defeat it both times, it's starting health pool will be less during this fight.

To make this fight with the Gravetender Greatwolf easier, you should, as previously mentioned, kill Champion’s Gravetender as soon as possible. As Gravetender Greatwolf enters the arena, move into the structure and use the pillars to your advantage.

There’s not a lot here that will make the fight easier except learning when to dodge and using the pillars to your advantage. Try to bait the Gravetender Greatwolf into its short range, two-hit, chomp attack as this leaves the greatest opening for a counterattack. The Gravetender Greatwolf has a three-hit dash attack that is extremely fast, so stay on your toes.

When the Gravetender Greatwolf reaches low health it will enter a powered-up state as signified by its eyes glowing red. A good strategy is to deal as much damage as possible while the Greatwolf is powering up. It will sit back and perform a howl for a few seconds. These seconds are vital in allowing you to get in some free damage.

Due to the Gravetender Greatwolf’s new state, it is able to output significantly more damage than before. You will have to be extremely careful when letting your shield down and extra careful when dodging. Again, use the building’s pillars to your advantage by running around them and putting a pillar between you and Gravetender Greatwolf. Take pot shots when you can, but if you see an opening, seize it.

When the Gravetender Greatwolf dies, you will receive Valorheart, a sword and shield combo, and Champion’s Bones, which are used to unlock the new multiplayer mode called, Undead Matches. By following this guide you should now have the necessary strategies for how to beat Champion’s Gravetender and Gravetender Greatwolf in Dark Souls 3’s new DLC, Ashes of Ariandel.
