Blizzard Asks Fans To Design Potential Heroes of the Storm Character

How do you think Deckard Cain should play?

It might surprise you to learn that, of all the various Blizzard characters fans have requested as new roster additions to the studio’s all-encompassing MOBA Heroes of the Storm, one of the most popular Diablo series choices is the helpful old prophet Deckard Cain. As it turns out, Blizzard has been listening to those fan requests and have recently posited a request of its own: make a compelling enough playable version of Cain, and Blizzard will add him to Heroes of the Storm.

Speaking with Polygon during last weekend’s BlizzCon event, Heroes of the Storm hero designer Nathan LaMusga said that he’d love to hear fan-made pitches for how Deckard Cain would work as a playable character, mainly because of how hard he feels it would be to pull off successfully:

“I love reading hero pitches on our main Heroes of the Storm forums and on Reddit. If you’re a community member reading this right now: Send me your Deckard Cain pitches. Make a Deckard Cain. I’d love to see our community’s pitches on that one.

He is one of the hardest heroes to think of design. When you really sit down and think about it, he’s a guy who loves to read books. What is he doing? Not to say it’s not possible, but it is one of the harder ones.”

LaMusga even tossed out a cheeky cross-game suggestion of his own, something which might actually work if Blizzard was crazy enough to try it:

“Maybe he plays Hearthstone or something like that.”

As difficult as it would be to think up a viable and fun playable version of Deckard Cain, something tells me the Blizzard fan community is up to the task. Also, let’s not forget that Heroes of the Storm is already a MOBA that has a hero who must be controlled by two players at once (Cho’Gall), a single hero who can be split into three (The Lost Vikings), and most recently, a hero who can play one of two entirely separate class roles. If any studio can make an unorthodox pick like Deckard Cain into a combatant who can rub elbows with the likes of Warcraft’s Arthas and StarCraft’s Kerrigan, it’s Blizzard.
