Nintendo has announced via a press release that its next major foray into mobile gaming, the endless runner title Super Mario Run, will launch for iOS devices next month.
Super Mario Run’s debut launch will be on December 15 and at launch it will be playable on both iPhone and iPad devices. Languages supported for the launch version will include English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Russian and traditional Chinese, and Nintendo plans to eventually roll out Super Mario Run to 151 different countries throughout the remainder of 2016 and into 2017.
In Super Mario Run, players don’t have direct control over Mario, but instead tap their device’s screen to have Mario jump as he automatically moves through various environments. Properly timing these jumps allows Mario to collect coins, defeat enemies, and even take down his nemesis Bowser using the old axe-on-a-rope-bridge trick (man, Bowser never learns does he). Nintendo says there will be a free trial version of Super Mario Run, which will allow users to sample the game’s three different modes. The full game can be unlocked through a one-time $9.99 purchase.
There’s no word yet on whether Nintendo plans to eventually port Super Mario Run over to Android devices, but if the game does well on iOS, chances are good that Mario will one day run and jump his way onto the Android-based Google Play store as well.
