Pete Hines has confirmed on twitter that Fallout 4 has now surpassed Skyrim in sales, making it the most successful Bethesda game ever.
Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines said ‘’Fallout 4 has gotta be the most successful game we’ve even launched in our company’s history, more than Skyrim, in terms on what we did.’’ He then later confirmed on twitter that Fallout 4 has sold more copies in the same time period then Skyrim.
"@rskovbo i'm comparing them over the same period of time. and yes."
Coming out in November 2015, Fallout 4 has shipped 12 million + copies on launch day, Bethesda has not provided a specific sales number though. Released in November 2011, Skyrim has sold 20 million + copies, just like Fallout 4, Bethesda has not provided a specific sales number.
During a Kinda Funny Gamecast interview featuring Pete Hines, Hines responded to some critique which says that ‘’Fallout 4 did not do enough to set itself apart from its predecessors.’’ Hines agrees and says that Fallout 4 shares commonalities with Fallout 3 BUT the nature of the beast with sequels is the balancing act between preserving the core formula and pushing things forward.’’
Hines compared it to Sony’s uncharted series saying it feels the same. ‘’If you played Uncharted 4 and that was your first game, I think you have a very different reaction to what that game is than if, like me, you played 1, 2 and 3.’’
Hines lastly gave us a ‘weak’ tease for what Bethesda Game Studios are going to work on next. ‘’Whether it’s Fallout or Elder Scrolls or whatever they’re gonna do next, I think their mantra is always we really gotta step up our game.’’
