This guide will show players how to get the Dreadfang Sword in Destiny. This Void Heavy Weapon first became available during the April Update and required players to complete a very simple quest. These days, however, the Dreadfang Sword can be purchased from Variks directly if you’ve already jumped through his quest hoops.
At the Gates
The Dreadfang Sword can be obtained in one of two ways. The first is to complete a quest called At the Gates, which we’ll elaborate on in a moment. Once you’ve completed At the Gates, the Dreadfang Sword can be purchased from Variks.
To begin the At the Gates quest, head to the Reef and speak with Variks, who is the quest giver in this case. You might also need to speak to Petra Venj, but this is unlikely to be related to At the Gates.
Step 1: Pretender to the Throne
Open the map of the Dreadnaught while in Orbit and you should see a Level 36 mission called Pretender to the Throne. Complete that mission and return to Orbit.
Step 2: They Can Run
You don’t have to go back to the Tower or Reef to begin the next step. Return to the Dreadnaught and launch Pretender to the Throne, completing it again. You might even have to do it a third time. The reason for this is that you need to obtain 20 Echoes of Malok, which are dropped when you kill Taken enemies. Pretender to the Throne is a great way to kill a bunch of Taken in a short period of time.
Step 3: Talk to Eris
Once you have your 20 Echoes of Malok, return to the Tower and speak to Eris Morn near the Hall of Guardians. She’ll provide you with the next step of your quest for the Dreadfang Sword.
Step 4: Blighted Chalice
You need to complete the Blighted Chalice Strike for this step. We’re not doing a walkthrough, so you’ll have to handle the beating it part on your own. Just remember that there’s a good cheese spot at the very back of the room. If one member of your Fireteam stands about an inch from the door at the back of the room, Malok, Pride of Oryx will not be able to hit you with his Axion Darts. Two members of your Fireteam should clear the Blights and deal damage, and one member should stand by the door to keep everyone safe.
Step 5: Return to Variks
Now that you’ve jumped through all of his hoops, Variks will give you the Dreadfang Sword. It’s got an Attack value of 320 and does Void damage. Given that Rise of Iron is currently out, it’s probably best if you infuse something into your Dreadfang Sword if you plan on using it.
